What does a Cardiovascular Surgery doctor do?
A cardiovascular surgeon treats diseases of the heart and great vessels that need surgery: bypass grafting for blocked coronary arteries, repair or replacement of heart valves, aortic aneurysms, narrowing of the carotid artery, bypass for blocked leg arteries and varicose vein surgery. The decision to operate is made together with the cardiologist on the basis of coronary angiography, echocardiography and CT.
Common reasons to consult
- Coronary artery disease (bypass)
- Heart valve disease
- Aortic aneurysm
- Carotid artery narrowing
- Blocked leg arteries
- Varicose veins
Frequently asked questions
Stent or bypass — how is the decision made?
For short narrowings in one or two arteries a stent is usually enough. With three-vessel disease, narrowing of the left main artery, diabetes or a weakened heart, bypass gives a more durable result. The decision is made jointly by a 'heart team' of cardiologist and surgeon.
How long is recovery after bypass surgery?
Patients usually spend 1–2 days in intensive care and 6–8 days in hospital in total. The breastbone takes 6–8 weeks to heal, during which heavy lifting is not allowed. With a cardiac rehabilitation programme, normal activity, work and sport can resume within 2–3 months.
What is the difference between a mechanical and a biological valve?
A mechanical valve lasts a lifetime but requires lifelong blood thinners (warfarin) and regular tests; a biological valve needs no blood thinners but may wear out after 10–15 years. Mechanical valves are usually preferred in younger patients and biological ones over 65; the choice is discussed individually.
When does an aortic aneurysm need surgery?
Surgery is advised when an abdominal aortic aneurysm reaches 5–5.5 cm, grows more than 1 cm a year or causes symptoms; smaller aneurysms are monitored with ultrasound or CT every 6–12 months. In suitable cases a stent-graft is placed from inside the vessel (EVAR) instead of open surgery.
