What does a Invasive Neuroradiology doctor do?

An interventional neuroradiologist treats diseases of the brain and spinal blood vessels from inside the vessels with catheters, without opening the skull: removing the clot blocking an artery in acute ischaemic stroke (thrombectomy), sealing aneurysms with coils and stents, embolising vascular malformations (AVMs), stenting a narrowed carotid artery and embolising vascular tumours before surgery. In stroke, time is decisive — these procedures are also performed as emergencies.

Common reasons to consult

  • Thrombectomy in acute stroke
  • Brain aneurysm
  • Arteriovenous malformation
  • Carotid artery narrowing
  • Cerebral angiography
  • Pre-operative tumour embolisation

Frequently asked questions

What is a thrombectomy and when is it possible?

A thrombectomy removes, with a catheter, the clot blocking a major brain artery during a stroke. It can usually be performed within the first 6 hours of symptoms, and in selected cases up to 24 hours, and substantially reduces disability. That is why it is vital to call 103 (in Azerbaijan) immediately at the first signs of stroke.

Does an aneurysm always need treatment?

A ruptured aneurysm must be sealed urgently. For small aneurysms found by chance, the decision depends on size, location, shape, age and family history — some are only observed. Endovascular (catheter) sealing is an alternative to open surgery in many cases.

Is cerebral angiography dangerous?

Diagnostic angiography is considered safe in experienced centres, with a risk of serious complications below 1%. Bruising at the puncture site is the commonest side effect. Contrast allergy and kidney disease must be reported beforehand.

What is recovery like after a procedure?

After planned aneurysm or stent procedures the patient usually stays in hospital 1–2 days and returns to normal life within a week; blood thinners are needed for a period after a stent. Recovery after a stroke depends on the extent of damage and continues with rehabilitation.
