What does a Invasive Oncology doctor do?

An interventional oncologist treats tumours without open surgery, using needles and catheters guided by CT, ultrasound or angiography: destroying liver, kidney and lung tumours with heat (radiofrequency or microwave ablation), delivering chemotherapy through the artery feeding a tumour (chemoembolisation), radioembolisation, precise biopsies, port placement and pain-relieving procedures. These treatments are part of a joint plan with the oncologist and surgeon.

Common reasons to consult

  • Ablation of liver tumours
  • Chemoembolisation (TACE)
  • Ablation of kidney and lung tumours
  • Image-guided biopsy
  • Port placement for chemotherapy
  • Pain relief for bone metastases

Frequently asked questions

Does interventional oncology replace surgery?

Not always. For small tumours (usually up to 3 cm) and few in number, ablation gives results comparable to surgery, and for patients who cannot have surgery it is the main option. For large or multiple tumours, chemoembolisation keeps the disease under control or prepares for surgery.

How is ablation performed?

Under CT or ultrasound guidance a thin needle is passed through the skin into the tumour and the tumour tissue is destroyed at high temperature with radiofrequency or microwave energy. The procedure takes 30–60 minutes, there is no incision, and patients usually go home the next day.

What is chemoembolisation?

A catheter inserted at the groin is guided to the artery feeding the tumour, and chemotherapy plus particles that block the vessel are delivered there; the tumour receives a high dose of the drug and is cut off from its blood supply. It is used mostly for liver tumours.

How long is recovery after a procedure?

Most patients go home after 1–2 days of observation and return to normal activity within a week. Fever, tiredness and pain for a few days afterwards (post-embolisation syndrome) are expected and are managed with medication.
