What does a Laboratory doctor do?

A laboratory physician (clinical laboratory specialist) analyses blood, urine and other biological samples and is responsible for the correct interpretation of results: complete blood count and biochemistry, hormones, infection markers, clotting, allergy and genetic tests, microbiology. The accuracy of a test begins with correct sample collection — fasting, medication and timing can all change the result.

Common reasons to consult

  • Complete blood count and biochemistry
  • Hormone tests
  • Infection tests
  • Urine and stool tests
  • Allergy panels
  • Pre-operative tests

Frequently asked questions

Which tests require fasting?

Blood sugar, lipid profile (cholesterol), iron, vitamin B12 and some hormones need 8–12 hours of fasting; water is allowed. A complete blood count, thyroid hormones, infection tests and HbA1c do not require fasting. The laboratory gives exact instructions for each test.

Does it matter that the sample is taken in the morning?

Yes — values such as cortisol, testosterone, iron and prolactin vary during the day, so collection between 8 and 10 a.m. is recommended. For prolactin you should sit quietly for 20–30 minutes beforehand and avoid exercise and stress.

If a result is outside the reference range, am I ill?

Not necessarily. The reference range covers 95% of healthy people, so even a perfectly healthy person can have one value slightly outside it. A result must always be interpreted by a doctor together with symptoms, other tests and the examination; the test is repeated when needed.

How often should I have check-up tests?

For healthy adults without symptoms, a complete blood count, blood sugar, lipid profile, liver and kidney values and a urine test once a year are enough. For people with chronic illness and after 40, the doctor sets an individual list and frequency.
