What does a Organ Transplantation doctor do?
A transplant surgeon performs organ transplants for end-stage organ failure — most often kidney and liver. Much of the work happens before and after the operation itself: thorough assessment of the recipient and the living donor, compatibility tests, the operation, adjustment of immunosuppressive medication (which prevents rejection) and lifelong follow-up. A nephrologist, hepatologist, anaesthetist and transplant coordinator work together in the team.
Common reasons to consult
- Kidney failure on dialysis
- End-stage liver cirrhosis
- Wishing to be a living donor
- Pre-transplant compatibility work-up
- Follow-up of a transplanted organ
- Adjusting immunosuppressive medication
Frequently asked questions
Who needs a transplant?
When kidney function has fallen to, or is approaching, the level that requires dialysis, or when liver cirrhosis is causing complications, a transplant is considered the best long-term solution. A transplant performed before dialysis starts gives better results.
Who can be a living donor?
A healthy person, usually aged 18–65, with a compatible blood group — a relative or someone permitted by law. The donor's kidneys, heart, blood sugar and blood pressure are examined thoroughly; a person whose other kidney is not healthy cannot donate.
Is there a risk for the donor?
Removal of one kidney is done laparoscopically; the donor stays in hospital 2–4 days and returns to normal life in 4–6 weeks. The remaining kidney takes over the work; donors should have their blood pressure and kidney function checked once a year.
What is life like after a transplant?
Most patients live an almost normal life without dialysis — working, travelling, exercising. Anti-rejection medication is taken for life at the same time every day and its dose adjusted with regular blood tests; avoiding infection is important.
