What does a Radiology doctor do?

A radiologist performs and interprets medical imaging: X-ray, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), mammography and bone densitometry. They write a report that answers the treating doctor's questions from the images — much of a diagnosis rests on that report. The radiologist also decides which examination is appropriate, the radiation dose and whether contrast is needed.

Common reasons to consult

  • MRI scan
  • CT scan
  • Ultrasound
  • X-ray
  • Mammography
  • Second opinion on existing images

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CT and MRI?

CT uses X-rays, is fast and excels for bone, lungs, bleeding and emergencies. MRI uses a magnetic field, involves no radiation and shows soft tissue — brain, spine, joints, abdominal organs — in more detail, but takes longer. The treating doctor and radiologist choose together.

Is the radiation from a CT scan dangerous?

One CT scan equals a few months to a few years of natural background radiation; the medical benefit far outweighs that risk. Modern scanners use low-dose protocols. In pregnancy and in children, ultrasound or MRI is preferred whenever possible.

Why is contrast given and is it safe?

Contrast shows vessels, inflammation and tumours more clearly. Iodine-based (CT) and gadolinium (MRI) contrast agents are safe for most people; kidney failure, a previous contrast reaction and certain medicines (metformin) must be mentioned beforehand. A brief warm feeling and a metallic taste are normal.

What should I know before an MRI?

Always mention metal implants, a pacemaker, an insulin pump or metal fragments in the body — some rule out MRI. All metal objects, watches, cards and phones stay outside the room. If you are claustrophobic, say so in advance; a sedative or an open scanner can be arranged.
